Chef by Branden

In our third grade class we learned from many careers in the real world. I was most interested in the Executive Chef. Ms. Kimberly Olson skyped with us from her kitchen at the Westin in Indianapolis.  I was inspired by how many people she serves everyday and how many kids she works with.

She was inspired to be a chef since she was a little girl. She has been a chef for fifteen years. She uses a lot of math in her job.

She works ten hours a day. In her spare time she plays with her dog or works in her garden.

Her kitchen is humungous. She has cooked for celebrities. She is also in the Chefs Move to School program started by Michelle Obama.

I think it would be awesome to be a chef because I enjoy making scrambled eggs and omelets. I also think it would be awesome to be a chef because I would meet new people and celebrities. Being a chef is going to require a lot of concentration, hard work, math skills, cooking skills, people skills, and understanding.  It would be a great job for me.

Mayor by Cole

Our class learned about the Mayor of Willowbrook.   He would always say, “ I know there’s always a solution.” If he does not know the answer to the problem, he sends out someone to solve it.

If I was the mayor, it would be a hard job. Mayors have to travel to the government to find out information for their community.  The mayor is in charge of the police, the firemen, and the people who work with the water.  The mayor makes sure his town is safe.

I think this is a good job because the mayor is the boss of the community.  He takes care of the people and makes good decisions.  Mr. Napoli is a good example of a mayor!

A mayor would be a tough job to have because there is always a lot to do.  It would be hard to manage everything!

I enjoyed listening to the mayor talk.  It made me want to be a mayor someday!

Police Officer by Brooke

Did you know that a police officer has to do a lot of training to be a police officer?   We learned this and many other facts about being a police officer in our career project.

We heard from Mr. Neimann, a police chief in North Riverside.

A police officer has a hard job because they have to do a lot of training and they are gone from their families a lot.  But they are there to help people in the community and make sure we are safe.

Mr. Neimann loves his job and enjoys the time at home to play with his kids and help cook dinner.  He is a good role model for us to be safe in our communities.

College Professor by Violet

Did you know that a college professor travels the world?  We did not learn this from the Internet.  We learned this in real life. Professor Lullo from Union college Skyped with us about her job.

A professor is a teacher in college that only teaches ages 18 and older.  The subject that you teach depends on your education.  You are constantly learning new things.  The students take 3 classes a week and each class is about an hour long.  For fun you can let your class do projects and learn new and interesting facts.

I would like this job because you could travel the world to learn more and you can teach any subject that you like. The last thing is that you talk to people all the time.  I learned a lot from this career and I liked the presentation very much!

Trader by Franki

       Did you know that a trader sells and buys corn? We learned this and many other facts about the trading career in our project.

      The farmers can’t grow corn in the winter. So the traders buy corn for them. They get it from Argentina, and other hot places.

      We heard from Mr. Jeff Gricus.  He works for the Board of Trade in the city.  He’s been in his job for 17 years. He can travel but he doesn’t. He spends more time taking calls. His favorite part about his job is that it’s challenging. His least favorite part is the computers, because computers can’t talk.

      This presentation was interesting to me because we learned new facts about trading that we didn’t know before.  I was impressed and learned something different.

      This would be a great job. If I was a trader, I would get to meet new people every day.

Engineer by Omar

Our third grade class has seen many kinds of careers. I was most interested in engineering. It would be exciting to build.

We met an engineer that is Mr. Tanbedawy. He meets new people everyday he goes to work. Most of his work is solved by measurement and math. He uses blueprints and constructs them into them.

The job starts on 7:00 a.m. and ends on 4:00 p.m.  His tasks are to have his work covered.  An engineer’s job is to build roads, bridges, train tracks and more.  You don’t only have to build you could fix or rebuild.

It is a really hard job to do. His work has to get done exactly on time. Sometimes he works on weekends. But there are also good thing like he meets new people everyday at work.

If you like to play with Legos and build stuff then an engineer is a good job for you. You would get to work with tools. And you can build a lot of things. I think it would be fun to be one.

Human Resources Manager by Greta

Did you know that a Human Resources Manger is always learning?  We learned this and many other facts about the H.R. career in our project.

Human Resources Mangers have many tasks.  They help people find jobs at the work, they celebrate when someone gets hired, and they help with insurance and payroll.

The hard parts are sometimes other people get mad at the H.R. people, and there can be a lot of work.  H.R. can be hard at times, but other it is a good career.

The good parts of this job are you get to meet a lot of new people, and see new places.  Human Resources Mangers help many nice people.

I think H.R.is a good job.  Anyone who wants to be a Human Resources Manger should follow their dreams.

Car Manager by Gianna

Did you know that 1 in 10 people work in the auto industry?  That means that at least two of us in the class will work in this area.  This was one of the many things that the general manager of Larry Roesch Volkswagen told us. 

            A general manager named Rich Sopron told us that he used to sell door to door but he didn’t like hounding people so he started car sales. One of his memorable moments is meeting Carlos Zambrano and being on television.

Mr. Sopron spends his day talking to people and he has been doing this for 11 years. The most cars he sold was 15 and the least he sold was 0.  His favorite part about his job is to see people going home happy but the one part that is harder is finding out what the customers want.

Mr. Sopron works long hours and has to work on Saturdays. In his free time he likes to golf and take care of his family. He said that he likes what he does.

I think this would be a good career because you would get to meet new people and you get to see people go home happy.
